Final Leg

by Admin on Mar.12, 2010, under Blog

I’m on my last semester here in China. I’m quite glad actually, living in a foreign country isn’t easy. Of course, generally living anywhere isn’t easy (unless you have someone doing everything for you and have lots of cash).

I will leave Changchun quite sad. Sad that in many instances, Changchun has not developed as quickly as it should have. Sad that the foreigners in Changchun seem to develop to be more negative about China rather than positive. Sad that most foreigners here in Changchun seem to be more or less the same as everyone else. They come as individuals (or not) but eventually pick up this “community” mentality… they become communists!!! There’s nothing wrong with being a communist; certainly not. Just don’t talk as if you aren’t, don’t talk as if you are better.

Sadly, I have never had the pleasure of meeting a foreigner like me; someone who blogs about their life here. The blogs I have found about life in Changchun by foreigners are outdated; as mine will be one day where there is someone just like me who comes along.

Mayflower Bar: No Indians Allowed?

by Admin on Jan.23, 2010, under Blog, Changchun

I met up with an acquaintance of mine who told me that he was in Mayflower yesterday. He claims to know one of the managers there. He told me that the manager told him, beginning today, Indians will not be permitted to enter Mayflower. Apparently, that goes for anyone who looks Indian too!

How factual is that? I don’t know and it’s obviously hard to believe. The reason this “ban” is supposed to be implemented is because of the following stereotypes of the Indians here:

1. There are too many occupying seats
2. They don’t buy anything
3. They remain sober, wait until everyone is drunk and then;
4. They pick-pocket/ steal wallets/ phones of the other customers.

When I was being told about this, I found it almost unbearable having to listen to such a load of crap from someone. If there’s something I’ve learned about most of the Chinese people I know, it’s that if they have an opinion about something, chances are, that opinion will not change. Why? Because it’s not their opinion necessarily, it’s the opinion of their parents, grandparents and almost everyone else’s.

Anyway, I sure hope this new rule is bogus, will update you on that eventually! I haven’t been to Mayflower (all three) since last year (2009’s New year’s Day)!
